Services for Ethel Witzenburg were held Wednesday, February 1, 2006, at the Church of the Nazarene in Pella.
She passed away on Saturday, January 28, 2006 at the Pella Regional Health Center-Long Term Care in Pella at the age of 94 years.
Ethel Cecilia Sjolin, daughter of David and Cecilia Anderson Sjolin, was born November 16, 1911, in Oakes, North Dakota. Ethel received her education at a country school in Oakes, North Dakota, completing the 8th grade and attended Oakes High School for one year. On March 29, 1934, she was united in marriage with Gerrit Witzenburg in Aberdeen, South Dakota. To this union six children were born: Gerald, Loren, Allen, Delwyn, Roger and JoAnn. Because of the depression and the dry conditions in North Dakota, the family moved to the Otley, Iowa area in 1937. They lived there for over fifty years. After Gerrit’s death April 15,1988, Ethel moved to Pella. She worked at Central College, Boomsma’s and Pella Regional Health Center. She was a member of the Otley Sunshine Bible Class, Summit Homemakers, Monroe Forever Young Club, and the Open Bible Church. Later she became a charter member of the Church of the Nazarene in Pella.
Survivors are her five children and their spouses: Loren and Alma Witzenburg of Pella, Allen and Doris Witzenburg of Newton, Delwyn and Rosemary Witzenburg of Knoxville, Roger and Brenda Witzenburg of Pella, and JoAnn and Anthony Nunnikhoven of Waukee; fourteen grandchildren, six step grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren and twelve step great grandchildren; two sisters: Ruth Hill of Oakes, North Dakota, and Margaret Koopmans of Ankeny, Iowa, three sisters-in-law: Lovella Sjolin of Renton, Washington, Louise Sjolin of Camden, South Carolina, and Betty Witzenburg of Fremont, Iowa, one brother-in-law, Jim Witzenburg of Bellevue, Nebraska.
Those who preceded her in death are her parents, her husband, her three month old son, Gerald Allen, six brothers: Ernest, Elmer, Henry, Gus, Oscar and Vernon Sjolin, five sisters-in-law: Edith Sjolin, Bernice Sjolin, Grace Witzenburg, Evalena Witzenburg, and Minnie Witzenburg, three brothers-in-law: Arnold, Dan and Bob Witzenburg, Alvil Hill, and Gerald Koopmans and a grandson, Doyle Witzenburg.
