Dorothy Marie Swihart, 81, formerly of Monroe, passed away Saturday morning, March 6, 2010 in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Funeral services for Dorothy were Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be left in her name to Newton Village and left at Pence-Reese.
Dorothy was born on August 11, 1928 in Minnesota, the daughter of Herman and Martha (Pahl) Diers. She was a high school graduate. Dorothy was employed in the Library Records at the Iowa State Historical Building in Des Moines, retiring in 1989. Dorothy was united in marriage with Wesley Marcil Swihart in 1945. To this union were born two sons, Robert and Greg. She devoted her life to her husband, sons and family. She and Wesley had lived in Clinton, MN, Newton, IA in 1952, Lead, SD, prior to Monroe in 1964.
Dorothy is survived by her sons: Robert K. (Cindy Jo) Swihart of Newton and Greg (Diana) Swihart of Newton; eight grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; sister Gertrude “Toots” (Vernon) Goldsmith of Big Stone, SD; brothers: Melvin (Brownie) Diers of Aberdeen, SD, Melford (Joan) Diers of Rush City, MN and Ted Diers of Rush City; brothers-in-law: Elwin Swihart of Newton and Gary (Mary) Swihart of Virginia; several nieces and nephews; and her many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Wesley on Oct. 1, 1991; her daughter Connie Marie Swihart; and brother Walter Diers.
