Baltimore, Md. – William Robert Romans, 80, of Baltimore, Md., formerly of Monroe, died of heart failure, Friday, Jan. 22, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Monroe. Burial will be at Silent City Cemetery in Monroe.
Visitation will be held after 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home in Monroe.
Memorials to the Monroe United Methodist Church will be accepted.
The son of William Hillborn and Lydia Grace (Bond) Romans, he was born Feb. 11, 1918 near Monroe. He attended Monroe schools and graduated from Central College in Pella, in 1939. He received his master’s and doctorate degrees in education from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
After teaching high school students in Iowa, Mr. Romans moved to Denver, Colo., where he taught elementary school for 10 years. He became the director of elementary education for the state of Colorado and published work books and teaching aids.
In 1963, Mr. Romans moved to Baltimore for health reasons. He is survived by three daughters, a son and a brother, James Bond Romans of Silver Spring, Md.

Services to be Held
Funeral services for William Robert Romans will be Friday at Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Monroe at 1:30 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Silent City Cemetery in Monroe. Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Friday. Rev. Karen Merrill, Pastor of the Monroe United Methodist Church will officiate.
William Robert Romans was born February 11, 1918, on a farm near Monroe, Iowa, to William Hilborn and Lydia Grace (Bond) Romans, descendants of Iowa pioneer families.
Robert received his primary and secondary education in the local schools, including two years in a one-room country school. He graduated from Central College in 1939 prepared to begin a career in education. He was able to earn a masters and later a Doctorate in Education from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
After teaching in high schools in Iowa, Robert taught in elementary schools in the Denver, Colorado area. He rose to become the Director of Elementary Education for the State of Colorado and later was on special assignment to the Adams County, Colorado schools. He published workbooks and teaching aids which were widely used throughout Colorado schools.
He left education due to health reasons and moved to the Baltimore, Maryland area in 1963. He died on January 22, 1999 at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Surviving are three daughters, a son, and a brother, James Bond Romans of Silver Spring, Maryland.
