Life Story of Joseph Long
Joseph Dahlgren Long, Sr., was born on December 31, 1895, at Maple Hill Farm in Monroe, Iowa. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Long.
Joseph graduated from High School in Monroe, and following his graduation from the C. C. Commercial College in Des Moines, Iowa; he joined his father in the Monroe Telephone Co. After serving in World War I for 20 months, in 1919, he married Ruby Butler and returned to the telephone company which he sold in 1952. In approximately 1954, he joined the staff of the Monroe State Bank from which he retired in 1960 and moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Mr. Long is survived by his wife, a son, Joseph D. Long, Jr., of Albuquerque, a daughter Anna May Herdman of Mount Clemons, Mich., 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Arthur E. Long of Sloan, Iowa, and his sister, Frances Allen of Tampa, Florida.
He was a member of the Monroe United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge of Monroe, consistory in Des Moines and the American Legion of Monroe.
Mr. Long expired in a local hospital in Albuquerque, on Friday, October 6, 1978, at the age of 82.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Walters-Coburn Funeral Home. Rev. Jerry Wolcott officiated. Interment was in the Silent City Cemetery.
