Life Story of Zeta Livingston
Funeral services for Mrs. Clyde (Zeta) Livingston of Monroe were held Tuesday, Jan. 25 at the United Methodist Church in Monroe. The Rev. Jerry Wolcott conducted the services. She was buried in the Silent City Cemetery at Monroe.
Mrs. Zeta Livingston, age 91 years, 9 months and 7 days, a longtime resident of the Monroe community died Saturday morning, January 22 at Skiff Memorial Hospital in Newton.
Zeta Violetta (Hummel) Livingston, daughter of James M. and Eliza (Newell) Hummel was born April 15, 1885, in Mound Prairie Township of Jasper County, Iowa. She attended the Wilson school near the family home. In 1902 she attended the Immaculate Conception Academy in Davenport, Iowa. When she was 18 the family moved to Newton.
Zeta V. Hummel and Edwin Clyde Livingston were united in marriage March 8, 1904. After a year on the Hummel farm in Mound Prairie Township, they moved to the farm about 4 miles north of Monroe where they lived until they retired and moved to their home in Monroe.
Zeta Livingston was a member of the Monroe United Methodist Church, Women’s Society of Christian Service, Martha and Mary’s Sunday School class.
She held a life membership in the Pythian Sisters, being honored with a 50-year certificate in May 1969. She was a past Chief and Temple Mother. In early days she rode horseback to attend temple meetings.
She was a member of the Rebekahs (Eureka #52) since 1949. She was a member of the Shelleday Women’s Relief Corps #138 since 1938, where she was patriotic instructor for a number of years. She was a charter member of the Jasper County Farm Bureau, and the affiliate KYT Club. She was a member of the Iowa Democratic Women’s Club, Democratic Committee Woman and served on the election board for many years.
Surviving are two daughters: Mrs. Harold (Wanda) Beeson, of Indianapolis, Ind., and Mrs. Fred (Ruby) Johnson of Monroe. Three grandsons: Dr. James H. Beeson of Chicago, Illinois; William K. Livingston of Buckingham, Iowa; and James M. Livingston of Altoona, Iowa; one granddaughter, Mrs. Raymond (Jeanine K.) Hasselman of Monroe and four great grandchildren. Other survivors included two nieces, two nephews and several grand nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, E. Clyde Livingston, May 21, 1962, her son William McClair (Buzz) Livingston, her parents, a sister, Mrs. Clarence E. (Carrie) Bower, a twin sister, Mrs. Maurice (Zola Viola) Baker, one brother, Virgil Hummel and one nephew Clarence H. Bower.
