J. W. LeGrand Sr., a pioneer of Marion and Jasper counties died at his home in Los Angeles, California, Nov. 8th.
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 11th at the Southwest funeral home in Los Angeles for the California friends and were attended by a number of former Iowa friends.
The remains arrived in Monroe Thursday morning and were taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Cochrane.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 from the Monroe Baptist church in charge of the Rev. A. D. Mohr, pastor of the Monroe church.
J. W. LeGrand, son of J. H. and Sarah, was born Jan. 9, 1846 near Springfield, Ills., and died at his home in Los Angeles, Calif., Nov. 8th, 1929 at the age of 83 years and 10 months.
At the age of eight with his parents he moved to Centerville, Iowa where he grew to young manhood, uniting with the Methodist church. He enlisted from Centerville in company D, 6th Iowa Infantry and served until the close of the Civil War.
He was united in marriage with Martha J. Karr, March 7th, 1867 who with four children preceded him in death. Later he was married to Teresa Agnes O’Brien. Four sons and five daughters also survive: Mrs. Mary Shannon of Indianola, Mrs. Elvira Marshall of Altoona, Ora Le Grand of Los Angeles, Mrs. Nellie Cochrane, Mrs. Mabel Clevenger, J. W. LeGrand, W. N. LeGrand and Harrison LeGrand of Monroe and Bud LeGrand of Los Angeles. He is also survived by twenty-one grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one brother, N. C. LeGrand of Maryville, Missouri and two sisters Mrs. Martha Ure of Chicago and Mrs. Martisha Karr of Lacyne, Kansas.
The floral offerings were many and beautiful expressing the high esteem and kindly sympathy of the many friends.
The pall bearers were George H. Orcutt, C. B. Livingston, George C. Kipp, George M. Dearth, F. L. Tice and Will Mullins.
The music was furnished by a quartet, Mrs. O. M. Wilson, Mrs. Miriam Hugien, Guy Wilson and Merle Montgomery with Mrs. Letha Gloyd accompanist.
N. C. LeGrand of Maryville, Missouri, a brother of the deceased and Mrs. O. D. Helming of Lincoln, Nebr., a niece, were here for the funeral.

Funeral Service for J. W. LeGrand Was Held Today
Pioneer of Marion and Jasper Counties Died at His Home In Los Angeles Friday – Interment in The Monroe Cemetery
Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Monroe Baptist church, for John LeGrand, Sr., who died Friday evening, November 8, at his home in Los Angeles, California. Services were in charge of Rev. A. D. Mohr, pastor of the Monroe Church.
Interment was made in the Monroe cemetery.
Funeral services were held at the residences in Los Angeles, on Monday.
John LeGrand, pioneer farmer and ranchman, Civil War veteran and citizen would have been 84 years of age January 9. He had been in poor health for the past several months and his death was not unexpected.
For many years Mr. LeGrand lived south of Monroe in Marion county where he built what is known as the LeGrand homestead, which was the family home. For a number of years he has lived in California, but each year spent several weeks in Monroe and among his friends and relatives in Marion county.
The music was furnished by a mixed quartet, Merle Montgomery, Guy Wilson, Mrs. O. M. Wilson and Mrs. Mirian Huigen, with Mrs. Ralph Gloyd accompanist.
