Mrs. Linnie Houck Errett

The death of Mrs. Eugene Errett, which occurred soon after the noon hour last Friday, April 15, had been looked for many weeks and yet the end came as a chock to the loved ones who had cared so tenderly for her and to the wide circle of friends who had known her from her babyhood.

Mrs. Linnie Houck Errett, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Houck, was born on a farm in Sherman Township, June 3, 1875. When she was about 7 years old her parents moved into town, where her happy youth and young womanhood is familiar to our people. On the 5th of April, 1896, her mother died, and she became the sole comfort of her father, and his home-keeper, in which her faithfulness and daughterly devotion was daily and hourly exemplified. She was a lovely Christian girl, a member of the First Congregational Church from childhood.

On the 5th of August, 1905, she was married to Eugene M. Errett and to them was born a little daughter, Elizabeth, now a little over three years of age. She was so happy in the love of her husband and baby girl and the devotion of her father, until about 15 months ago when her health began to fail and it became evident that the dread disease consumption had marked her for its prey. Its fatal work was slow but sure, and none but Linnie and her loved ones knew of the anxious watching and hoping during these long months of suspense. She remained conscious almost to the last moment of life and while wanting to live for her baby and friends was ready to answer God’s summons. Her death breaks up the once happy home, the bereaved husband and motherless baby will live with his mother, Mrs. R. H. Errett, and the father is left alone in his home.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. A. B. Appleby in the Congregational Church Sunday afternoon. The music was by Messrs. Fred Meredith, will Blaylock, Ross Mills and Charlie Errett, with Robert McGregor as organist. The pallbearers: Messrs. Fred Meredith, Harry McCardell, Chas. and Adolph Behner, A. E. Hindorff and Henry Kennedy. Beautiful flowers almost hid the handsome casket and covered the pulpit and altar railing. Interment was in Newton Cemetery.

Friends from out of town attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Houck and Mrs. Laona Apgar of Des Moines; Mrs. Austin Halliwell, Mitchellville; Mrs. James Sims, Mrs. Josiah Taylor and Lavita Taylor of Prairie City; Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Kennedy of Sherman Township; Mrs. Jas. McCaulley and daughter of New Sharon. ~ Newspaper unknown.
