George A. Harrelson

A memorial service for George will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 6th at the funeral home; conducted by Rev. Merle Smith of the St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Newton.

The family will greet friends from 10-11 a.m., Wednesday, July 6th at the funeral home.

Burial will be at the Newton Union Cemetery in the Veteran’s section with Military Honors by American Legion Post 111 and the U. S. Navy Honor Guard.

Memorials to the Jasper County Animal Rescue League and Humane Society may be left at the funeral home. Memorials may also be mailed to the Wallace Family Funeral Home, please add, Attn: Harrelson Family on the envelope.

George A. Harrelson was the son of George R. and Alberta “Allie” Reger Harrelson, was born in Boynton, Missouri. He was a graduate of Milan High School in Milan, Missouri. George served his country in the U. S. Navy from December of 1947 till January of 1952 during the Korean War.

On September 29, 1977, George was united in marriage with Betty J. Dawley Agan in Newton, Iowa. He was a production worker for the Maytag Company in Newton, Iowa, retiring on June 30, 1990, after 35+ years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 111, VFW Post 1655, Newton Elks Lodge No. 1270 and Moose Lodge No. 923. George loved being with his family. He was an avid bowler, a St. Louis Cardinals Baseball and Chicago Bears Fan; he enjoyed gardening and doing jigsaw puzzles. George and Betty enjoyed their retirement.

George died on Thursday, June 30, 2016 at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton, he was 88. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, George “Bud” Harrelson, Jr. and brothers, Joe and Dale Harrelson.

Those left to honor and cherish George’s memory are his wife, Betty of Newton; children, Sue Van Gorp of Merriam, Kansas and Jeffrey (Lisa) Agan of New Sharon; his six grandchildren, Michael Harrelson of Des Moines, Iowa, Dustin Van Gorp of Denver, Colorado, Dylan Van Gorp of Denver, Colorado, Mike (Olivia) Miller of Pleasantville, Iowa, Joseph Agan of Pleasantville, Iowa and Abbie Agan of Pella, Iowa; and five great-grandchildren, Sebastian and Kemper Atteberg and Brynn, Colton, and Claire Miller. ~ The Wallace Family Funeral Home, Newton, Iowa 30 June 2016.
