METZ - Funeral services were held for George William Gist Tuesday, Mar. 10, at 2 p.m. at the Sugar Grove Grange hall with the Rev. J. S. Schroder of Gilmore City and Rev. Clyde McDonald of Des Moines in charge.
Music was furnished by John Hitchler, Mrs. Roy Baty and Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Edwards, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. T. J. Kating. Pallbearers were Harry Snook, T. J. Kating, Nat Boyd, Fred Engle, John Hitchler and John Gibson. Interment was held in the family lot in the Sugar Grove cemetery.
George William Gist was born on a farm near Greencastle, Ia., April 17, 1866, the son of Holden Collins and Harriet (Boyd) Gist. He grew to manhood in the vicinity of Metz and was married to Eva J. Trimble on October 27, 1887. To this union three children, all surviving, were born. Roy E. of Des Moines, Minnie (Mrs. D. O. Hunker) of Rock Island, Ill.; and Charles W. of North Hollywood, Calif.
Mrs. Eva Gist died at the time of the birth of third child.
On February 21, 1892 he was married to Paralie Meade at Newton. They observed their golden wedding anniversary two weeks and one day before his death.
This union was blessed with eight children: Eleanor, who died in infancy, and seven who in addition to his wife survive: Harry J. of Gilmore City, Giles G. of Des Moines, Elizabeth (Mrs. J. M. Dahl) of Gilmore City, Nellie (Mrs. W. R. Saathoff) of Gilmore City, George M. of Bradgate; Margaret (Mrs. Dale Cupp) of Clarion and Kenneth J. of Barling, Ark.
He is also survived by one brother, Charles E. Gist of Newton. One brother, two half-brothers and two half-sisters preceded him in death. Twenty-six grandchildren survive.
Mr. Gist farmed and worked in the mines in Jasper county until 1913, when the family moved to Pocahontas county where he continued farming until ill health forced his retirement about seven years ago. Since May 1933 he has resided in
Gilmore City where his health gradually declined until his death on March 8, 1942.
