Traffic Mishap Fatal To Newton Man
James Meyer, 36, Killed; 5 Others Injured Sunday

A Newton man was killed and five persons were injured in a two-car head-on collision on a gravel road two miles south and one mile east of Colfax Sunday afternoon at 5 o’clock.

The victim, James Meyer, 36, single, died en route to Skiff Hospital in Newton. According to investigating Iowa Highway Patrolman Clint McClintock, Meyer died of a broken neck. Meyer was Jasper county’s second road victim in three days.

In critical condition at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines is Susan Diane Tomlonovic, 17, of Colfax. McClintock said that she also has a broken neck. Miss Tomlonovic was the driver of one of the two cars involved.

In fair condition today is James Willard Cleverley, 37, a Newton attorney and the driver of the other car. Also injured in the crash were Jimmy Willard, 7, and Linda Lee, 5, son and daughter of Cleverley, and his mother, Mrs. Mary Cleverley, 62. All are listed in “fair” condition, except Linda, listed “good” in Skiff Hospital.

The Cleverleys and Meyer were riding in the same car while Miss Tomlonovic’s sister Nancy was riding with her. Nancy received only minor cuts and bruises.

McClintock stated that Miss Tomlonovic was traveling east and Cleverley was going south. The two cars met at the intersection. Both cars were completely demolished. There were no stop signs at the intersection of the two county roads.
Assisting McClintock were Jasper County Deputy Sheriff chuck Hutchings, Highway Patrolmen Wayne Danielsen and Dan Newbury.

Meyer was supervisor of testing in research and development division at The Maytag Company. He had been employed there since January of 1951. Meyer was also well

Known for his participation in the Sky Kings, Newton model airplane club, he served as president of the organization in 1961.

Miss Tomlonovic was a star forward on this year’s Colfax girls basketball team. She is a senior at Colfax high school and is president of the student council.

Funeral arrangements for Mr. Meyer have not been completed but have been set tentatively for Wednesday morning at Hoffman Mortuary in Dubuque.

Toland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Meyer is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul J. Meyer of Dubuque; two brothers, Thomas Meyer of Dubuque and Dr. Paul Meyer of San Diego, Calif., and a sister, Mrs. Robert (Doris) Nelson of Fort Dodge.

A mechanical engineer at the Maytag Co., he was a veteran of World War II.

The son of Paul J. and Margaret C. Klein Meyer, he was born Dec. 18, 1927 in Dubuque.

Mr. Meyer, who resided at 423 E. Seventh St. N., came to Jasper County Jan. 2, 1951.
