Arthur L. Smith, age 89, of Grinnell, died on Wednesday, February 10, 2016, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A celebration of his life will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 13, 2016, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Pastor John Epperson officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to his service. Pallbearers are Larry Manning, Norman Schroeder, Don Beck, Howard McDonough, Dennis Moon and Jim Van Draska. Interment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.

Memorials may be designated in his name to East Poweshiek Ambulance Service, Grinnell Regional Medical Center Emergency Room or to the Grinnell Elks Lodge, mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.

Arthur Lee Smith was born the son of Glen and Frances (Miller) Smith on July 12, 1926, in Kewanee, Illinois. He was raised in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1944.

He was united in marriage to Marjorie Lee Dye on March 17, 1966, in Grinnell. Art had four children: Thomas, Patrick, Susan and Traci. They lived in Grinnell most of their lives and Art worked for his parents at Grinnell Dairy right out of High School until 1953. He worked the next 45 years of his life as a wholesale milkman with other area dairies. He was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and was lifelong member of the Grinnell Elks Lodge and the Masonic Lodge.

Art was a family man, a friend to many and a stranger to none. He loved visiting with people and spent countless hours playing cards and socializing at the Elks Lodge. He loved those special visits from his grandchildren, and held a special love for his boxer dogs. His enjoyments included taking vacations to Colorado, reading western books by Louis L'Amour, watching Lawrence Welk shows, and watching Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes football games.

Art is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marjorie Smith of Grinnell; son, Patrick (Mary Jo) Smith of Grinnell; two daughters, Susan Goehring of Knoxville, Iowa and Traci Smith of Brooklyn, Iowa; two grandchildren, Monica Loupee of Newton, Iowa and Matthew (Sarah Owens) Smith of Grinnell; and four great grandchildren, Chaison and Ashlyn Loupee of Newton and Ella and Drake Smith of Grinnell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Thomas Smith; daughter-in-law, Shirley Smith; and sister, Donna Simmons. ~ Smith Funeral Home, Grinnell, Iowa 10 Feb 2016.
