Harry Jess, 88, former resident dies on Tuesday

Harry Jess, 88, formerly of 809 E. 10th St. S., a resident of Mitchellvillage at Mitchellville for the past two years, died Tuesday afternoon at the Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Reese Chapel.

The rev. Jerome Egel, pastor of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Reese Chapel after 7 p.m. today.

Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Reese Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society will be accepted. Memorials may be left at the Reese Funeral Home.

Survivors are a son, Harry Leroy Jess of rural Baxter; a daughter, Mrs. Doyle (Gladys) Burnham of Lockridge; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Bert (Henrietta) Snook of Newton and Mrs. John (Margaret) Bale of Mitchellvillage in Mitchellville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife in 1972, a daughter, two grandchildren, three brothers and a sister.

Mr. Jess was a lifetime and 60-year member of the Oak Ridge Grange and a past member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge.

He had farmed for many years northwest of Newton, retiring and moving to Newton in 1962.

The son of Peter and Henrietta Jess, he was born May 27, 1893 in Davenport.

He was married to Henrietta Flamme (sic-this is his mother) Feb. 20, 1918 at Newton. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton Iowa, June 24, 1981.
