Kathryn Piburn
1921 - 2016

Longtime Boulder resident Kathryn (Kay) Piburn, 94, passed away on January 8 in Loveland. She was born on February 4, 1921, at her family's farm near Shenandoah, Iowa. Her parents were Raymond and Hazel (Zach) Stewart. She grew up surrounded by many wonderful aunts and uncles as well as first cousin Mary McQueen, who grew up with Kay on the farm. She married Don Piburn, also raised on an Iowa farm, on January 11, 1942, in Hollywood, near where he was helping build airplanes for the war effort. The couple lived in Los Angeles until 1943 when Don was assigned to the Occupying Forces in Germany. Kay and their son, Mike, lived on the same Iowa farm she grew up in until Don's return. The couple and their two sons moved to Boulder in 1958. Kay and Don moved to Loveland in 2010. Kay was a lifetime homemaker.

She and Don were longtime members of the First Presbyterian Church of Boulder. The couple also spent many summer days at their cabin near Grand Lake, Colorado. She was beloved by many neighbors and friends, many of whom had affectionate names for her, such as "Auntie Kay."

Kay is survived by sons Mike (Pat) Piburn of Carbondale, Colorado, and Gregg (Sherrie) of Loveland; grandchildren Dan (Giselle) Piburn of Santa Fe, Doug (Gayle) Piburn of Los Angeles, Corlet (Mark) Boelman of Loveland, Alyse Piburn of Frisco, Colorado, and Bret (Shante) Piburn of Oceanside, Calif.; and great-grandchildren Coleman and Amelie Piburn of Santa Fe, Stella, Henning and Rowley Piburn of Los Angeles, and Kyle and Serenity Boelman of Loveland; and first cousin Mary McQueen of Newton, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Don, and parents, Ray and Hazel Stewart.

Service arrangements are pending. Kay and Don's ashes will be buried at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver. Donations can be sent to Halcyon Hospice or The Deacons Fund at the First Presbyterian Church in Boulder in care of Allnutt Funeral Home.
