Norma Ruth Schuttinga, 89, died June 22, 2015, at Park Ridge Specialty Care in Pleasant Hill.
She was born in Prairie City Feb. 2, 1926, the daughter of Everett and Jenny De Graff Rouwenhorst. She graduated from Prairie City High School in 1944. On May 21, 1944, she was united in marriage to Arthur Wayne Schuttinga at Prairie City, where they made their home. They lived there for 29 years where Art worked as a barber and Norma held various secretarial jobs in Des Moines, and was a medical assistant for Dr. Veverka in Prairie City. In 1971, Art began working as administrator for various nursing homes throughout Iowa, and Norma also worked in several of these which brought them to Pella, where they worked together until their retirement in 1989. Norma was a member of Trinity Reformed Church in Pella and participated in a Circle Bible Study. After Art’s death in 1995, Norma worked part-time at the Town Crier along with various volunteer jobs at the hospital, library and church. In March 2006, after complications from a fall in her home, she became a resident of Park Ridge Specialty Care in Pleasant Hill, where she resided until her death.
Surviving are her two daughters, Marla Winegar of Altoona, and Pam (Howard) Pothoven of Pella; four grandchildren, Tom and Carolyn Winegar of Prairie City, Shelley and Tony Dorman of Ankeny, Kelly and Steven Schwen of Chanhassen, Minn., and Kevin and Stephanie Pothoven of Clive; and nine great-grandchildren, Tony, Jack and Megan Winegar, Nick Eller, Lauren, Lilly and Luke Schwen, and Sophia and Stella Pothoven. Also surviving are her siblings, Leona VandeLune of Prairie City, Maxine Schuttinga of Altoona, Melvin (Ann) Rouwenhorst of Pella, Laverna Aalbers of Ankeny; two sisters-in-law, Joan Van Wyk of Centennial, Colo., and Mary Jane Schuttinga of Prairie City.
Preceding her in death were her husband; parents; sister, Louise Kane; infant granddaughter, Traci Pothoven; son-in-law, Marv Winegar; and several brothers and sisters-in-law.
