Obituary for Edith Pearl Lee

Edith Pearl Lee, 100, of Newton and formerly of Given, died Thursday, December 3, 2015, at the Nelson Manor in Newton. She was born September 24, 1915, in Mahaska County, the daughter of Frank Pierce and Lela Ellen Whitsel Harper. Edith was baptized at an early age at the Given M.E. Church. She graduated with honors from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1933.

On August 2, 1936, she was united in marriage to Delmer Lee at Lancaster, Missouri. Delmer died April 7, 1979. Following their marriage, Edith stayed home to care for her family. She was a member of the Eddyville Christian Church where she had been a Sunday School teacher, youth leader, and C.W.F. leader. She was active in 4-H when she was younger and had been a 4-H leader for her childrens’ clubs. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening and canning. Edith had also been a member of the Friendly Neighbors Club in Given. Edith had a deep faith in the Lord. Her faith and family were the center of her life.

Her family includes two children and their spouses, Judith and Charles Richmond of Newton, and Thomas and Marcia Lee of Huntsville, Arkansas; a son in law, Kenneth Schultz of Montezuma; ten grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; thirteen great great grandchildren; and nieces and a nephew.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a son and his wife, James and Sheryl Lee; a daughter, Janice Schultz; and a brother, Gene Harper.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 9, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. in the Eddyville Christian Church in Eddyville with Reverend Dennis Durst officiating. The family will greet friends and relatives in the fellowship hall of the church following the funeral ceremony until 1:00 p.m. A procession will leave the church at 1 p.m. on Wednesday and go to Henness Cemetery southwest of Oskaloosa for a graveside service. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Open visitation will begin Tuesday after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and continue until 5:30 p.m. Edith’s family would like to thank the staff and residents at Nelson Manor for the compassion and kindness they showed their mother over the years.
