Clara Sumpter Dies Sunday; Rites Thursday

Mrs. Perry (Clara Alta) Sumpter, 88, of 711 W. 5th St. S., a resident of Newton since 1971, died Sunday evening at the University Hospitals in Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Johnson-Reese Chapel.

The Rev. H. Eugene Cedarholm, pastor of the First Lutheran Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Union Chapel Cemetery near Ira.

Friends may call at the Johnson-Reese Chapel after 7 p.m. today.

Survivors are a son, Otis Sumpter of Baxter; two daughters, Mrs. George (Hildred) Nissen of Davenport and Mrs. Lester (Helen) Perry of Baxter; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Van Plumb of Newton and Harry Plumb of Des Moines; and a sister, Mrs. Jennie Taylor of Baxter.

Mrs. Sumpter was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter, Maude, and five brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Sumpter, who with her husband farmed near Baxter, continued to farm following his death.

The daughter of William C. and Laura Plumb, she was born Dec. 12, 1889 on a farm near Baxter and was educated in rural Jasper County schools.

She was married in 1911 in Des Moines. ~ Newspaper unknown, possibly The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa Tues 7 Mar 1978.
