ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands – Dr. Thomas L. Jorris, 36, of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands; a former resident of Newton, died at his home Wednesday evening, July 29, in Washington, D.C. Funeral services are pending.
Survivors are his wife, Meredani, a son, James, 8, at home; three brothers, the Rev. Barry Jorris of Mora, Minn., John Jorris of St. Paul, Minn., and Paul Jorris of Minneapolis, Minn.; a sister, Carol Barlow of Grinnell; his mother, Margaret Jorris of Newton; and his maternal grandmother, Carrie Noble of Tama.
He was preceded in death by his father, three brothers, Joseph, Peter and David.
Dr. Jorris, who recently received his doctor of philosophy degree in organic chemistry from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., had taught at a college in the Virgin Islands for a year.
He had been an active member of the Assembly of God in Newton, Arlington, Va., and Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas.
The son of James G. and Margaret Noble Jorris, he was born Sept. 18, 1950 in Davenport, was a 1968 graduate of Newton Community High School and a 1972 graduate of Central College in Pella.

ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands – Funeral services for Dr. Thomas L. Jorris, 36, of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, a former resident of Newton, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at the First Assembly of God in Newton.
Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Wallace–Pence Funeral Home in Newton.
He died Wednesday evening in Washington, D.C.
