Alan Mark Schendel, of Prairie City, Iowa, was welcomed into the house of the Lord on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. He was 67 years old. His life will be celebrated with a memorial mass at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 30 at Saints John & Paul Catholic Church in Altoona. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 29 at 5:00 p.m. at the same church, with a wake service beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The son of Verne Elton and Ruby Amanda (Hubin), Al was born on October 15, 1948 in Morris, MN. He graduated from the University of Minnesota Morris in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. On April, 24, 1971, he was united in marriage to Mary Katherine Silbernick. He served in the Army National Guard from 1972 to 1977. He served many roles at Sacred Heart (MN) Community School District, Prairie City Community Schools and PCM School District, including teacher, coach and athletic director. Al was active in his community, serving as treasurer of CIRAD, Lions Club member, Park Board member and Library Board member. Al also umpired girl's high school softball for 25 years. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, traveling/cruising, golfing, painting, being outside, riding his bike, growing his faith and watching the Minnesota Vikings. His genuine smile, enthusiasm for life and willingness to help everyone will truly be missed.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Mary of Prairie City; his daughter Amy O'Neil (Brian) of Williamsburg, IA; his son Timothy Schendel (Julie) of Clive, IA; his son Thomas Schendel (Amy) of Prairie City, IA; four siblings, Muriel, Dick, Nancy and Jean; seven grandchildren (Mackenzie and Trey O'Neil; Tate, Tyson and Sydney Schendel; and Ella and Alana Schendel); and 26 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, John.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the benefit and growth of CIRAD, the PCM Food Pantry and the Prairie City Ambulance fund. The Al Schendel Memorial Fund has been established at Great Western Bank in Prairie City. ~ The Des Moines Register, Des Moines, Iowa 27 Oct 2015.
