Former Area Resident Dies

William Lyman “Chip” Bowen, 79, a former resident of Prairie City, died recently at Indianapolis, Ind.

Memorial services were held Wednesday at the Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Prairie City.

The Rev. B. D. Hinegardner, pastor of the Prairie City Church of the Brethren, conducted the services. Burial was in the Waveland Cemetery in Prairie City.

Survivors are his wife, Mary Ann; two sons, James L. of Smith Flat, Calif., and Dr. Larry S. of Fairfax, Va.; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Mary Elizabeth) Welch of Kansas City, Kan.; eight grandchildren; and a great grandchild.

Also surviving are two brothers, Murrell of Colfax and Robert of Prairie City; a sister, Mrs. Travis (Kathryn) Walters of Prairie City; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Vernon Winifred Bowen of Prairie City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, two sisters and a grandson.

Mr. Bowen, a member of the Indianapolis Lutheran Church, had been a traveling freight agent for the New York Central Railroad and had been a deputy sheriff in California from 1962 to 1971.

He had moved to California in 1941 and to Indianapolis in 1977.

The son of Williams and Elizabeth Stewart Bowen, he was born June 3, 1900 at Bussey and was a 1920 graduate of Prairie City Community High School.

He was married to Mary Anne Lampman June 2, 1926 in Marshalltown. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa Thurs 16 Aug 1979.
