Former Colfax Teacher Committed Suicide

Miss Caroline Uhl, of Mitchellville, Hung Herself Sunday Evening

Miss Caroline Uhl, of Mitchellville, committed suicide last Sunday evening by hanging herself in the barn at her home in that city.

Miss Uhl was a teacher in the Colfax schools a number of years ago and has a large acquaintance here who regret to learn of her rash act.

She had been in poor health for several years, but the past year her condition had been more serious, and it is believed this was the direct cause of her suicide.

About ten years ago her father, J. B Uhl, took his life in the same way and in the loft of the same barn. Mr. Uhl, before his death, was a prominent man of Polk County and the state, having served at one time as a member of the State Board of Control.

Miss Uhl was about 50 years of age. She leaves to mourn her passing, her aged mother, Mrs. Louise Uhl of Mitchellville, one sister, Mrs. Knuckles of Grinnell, and three brothers, Fred, Edwin and Raymond Uhl.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon from the Christian Church in Mitchellville and interment in the Grinnell Cemetery. ~ The Colfax Tribune, Colfax, Iowa Thurs 1 Oct 1931.
