Charles J. Smith, age 88 of Des Moines and formerly of Colfax, died Tuesday, May 15, 2012, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, May 18, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Colfax. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery in Des Moines at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will take place on Friday at the church from 9:30 until service time. The son of Joseph and Wilhelmina Smith, Charlie was born on June 8, 1923, in Des Moines.

On June 9, 1945, he was united in marriage to Margaret Fern Morris. The couple had nine children. Charlie was a proud grandfather of 28, a great gradfather of 21, and a great-great grandfather of two. Charlie to some and Chuck to others, he was a long time member of All Saints Parish in Des Moines and worked as a mail clerk for the Des Moines Post Office until his retirement. Charlie loved landscaping, gardening, photography, model railroading, drawing, painting, and traveling.

He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret; children, Michael (Terri), James (Nikki), Daniel's widow, Margo, Gregory (Nancy), Thomas (Casey), Timothy (Silvia), Theresa (John) Maybrier, Kathleen Smith (Steve), and Elizabeth (Terry) Anthony. Also surviving are a sister, Billie Mae (Leroy) Uitermarkt; a brother, Richard (Mary) Smith and lovingly by his many grandchidren.
