Penelope Jean Gerhart, age 70, died unexpectedly on December 22, 2012. Born on October 16, 1942, to Carl and Violet (Wicker) Battoe in Rochester, New York, Penny grew up in Des Moines. She trained to be a hair stylist, yet spent her career running several restaurants and a house cleaning business. When her family was young, she stayed home and cared for her beloved children, and later in life her mother and step-father.

Penny enjoyed being outdoors, reading, playing computer games, and shopping, but her greatest joy was spending time with her family.

She is survived by her children, Dawn Wilts, David (Lisa) Gerhart, Deb Gerhart, Darrin (Mary Jo) Gerhart, and Pam Haney; eight grandchildren; brother, John Battoe, and dog, Maggie.

Penny was preceded in death by infant daughter, Danielle and her beloved mom. Penny was very loved and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Services will be Thursday, December 27, starting with viewing at 1 p.m. at Caldwell Raddatz Funeral Home, 8201 Hickman Road in Urbandale.
