Winona Sill passed away Wednesday, March 24, 2015, at her home at Park Centre in Newton. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton has been entrusted with the arrangements. Per Winona’s wishes, her body was cremated.
A memorial services for Winona will be held at a later date. There is no visitation planned at this time. In lieu of flowers memorials in Winona’s name are being designated.
Winona Evalee Sill, 81, the daughter of Frank and Ella (Cheeseman) Hammons, was born Oct. 26, 1933, near Goldsberry, Macon County, Mo. She attended rural country schools, graduating from the Ethel, Missouri Senior High School Class of 1950, at the age of sixteen. She went on to attend Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (Truman University) in Kirksville. Winona taught school in Missouri for four years, prior to moving to Knoxville. She taught there for four years, with better pay. After Knoxville, she moved to and taught school at Newton.
On Dec. 29, 1961, Winona was united in marriage with Dean Irwin Sill, at the First United Methodist Church in Newton. To this union three children were born, Rodger, Verlyn and Ellen. After all her children had started school, Winona earned a BA in Teaching from Drake University in Des Moines, and went to teach in Monroe. Winona was a devoted wife and mother, and if she had a failing, it was her generous nature. She had enjoyed teaching for 35 years, prior to her retirement in 1994. Since Jan. 6, 2014, Winona has resided at Park Centre’s Garden View Unit.
Those left to honor Winona’s memory include her beloved husband Dean; her three children; eight grandchildren; one brother and one sister; and her many friends and past students.
