NewtonMary N. Backus, 77, of Newton died of a heart attack Thursday at home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Reese Chapel in Newton, with burial at Newton Union Cemetery.
She was born near Mingo and lived in Carson City, Nev., before moving to Newton in 1989. She was a retired stock supervisor at J.C. Penney Co., Inc., in Carson City and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
A sister, Louise Backus of Newton, survives.
Friends may call after 1 p.m. today at the funeral chapel, where the family will be present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society. ~ Probably Des Moines Register or Newton Daily News, Monday May 14, 2001
