Mrs. Harshner Is Found Dead
Body of Jasper County Woman, 73, Found in Cistern At Her Home
Mrs. Mary Ann Harshner, 73, life-long resident of Jasper county, was drowned last night or early this morning when she jumped or fell, into a cistern at her home four miles south of Newton. No funeral arrangements have been made.
The body was found at 2:30 a.m. and a physician was called from Newton. She was reported to have been in ill health for some time.
Mrs. Harshner, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Selbher, was born in Jasper county May 12, 1862, on a farm, just one mile from her present home.
Following her marriage, she and her husband moved to the present farm, where she lived until her death. She died at the age of 73 years, 1 month, and 14 days.
She is survived by her husband; three children, Elsie, at home; Mrs. Kathryn Carsten of Oskaloosa and Mrs. Barbara Ver Steeg of Newton; two grandchildren, Artie Ver Steeg and Betty Jane Carsten, and a brother, John Selbher of near Newton.
Mr. Harshner is reported to be suffering with a heart ailment.
