Keith Eugene Jones
IRA – Keith Eugene Jones, the son of Zenas C. Jones and Alta Cross Jones, was born October 14, 1920 on the old Jones homestead south of Ira, Ia. He lived there all his life.
Besides his parents he is survived by his sisters: Mary, Helen, Verla and Cleo and his little brother, Lowell, all younger than Keith. Other relatives outside his immediate family he leaves six uncles, two aunts and 28 first cousins.
While a small child, he was seriously ill from a mastoid infection and the resulting operation, and later from pneumonia.
In November 1934, he became ill and in December underwent an operation for acute appendicitis and following that he seemed to be recovering, but finally his ailment developed into the obscure and incurable disease known as “Hodgkins disease” involving the lymphatic system and ultimately all the glands of the body.
He had the care of the local, the University at Iowa City and at Cedar Rapids physicians. He died at his home June 28.
Although less than 15 years of age, Keith had completed his second year in Mingo high school. He passed the eighth grade county examinations in 1933. He was an active worker of the Willing Workers Sunday school class in the Methodist Episcopal church at Ira. He was a clean, steady, dependable boy loved by his young associates and highly respected by his elders.
Carl Grey of Newton held a short service at the home and Ernest Earley of Newton sang a solo, “In The Garden.” The Rev. Mr. Northrop of the Congregational church at Baxter had charge of the services at the Ira Methodist Episcopal church at 2 p.m.
Esther and Doris Grey sang “Whispering Hope,” “Sometime We’ll Understand” and “No Never Alone,” accompanied by Carl Grey and themselves on Hawaiian guitars.
The pallbearers were boys of his Sunday school class: Junior and Conrad Hunter, Johnny Stinson, Glen Dawson, John Taylor and Tommy Bucklin.
Lucille Esch played the processional.
Those attending from a distance were Mrs. Rebecca Cross and daughter Aura and George Bass of Winterset; Jay Stickney; Mr. and Mrs. Otis and daughter of Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. Petersen and children of Cedar Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. Jay Hall of Bondurant; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Palmer and Belle Palmer of Cambridge; Mr. and Mrs. Willard Dullard and Elmer Iske of Des Moines; Fred Gardner of Rhodes; Mr. and Mrs. Ross Sutton of Rhodes and a number of friends and relatives from Newton, Colfax, Baxter and Mingo.
