WALTER BECKER

Walter Francis Becker, 69, of Lynnville died Thursday, July 13, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

The body was cremated. A memorial service was conducted Saturday at the Lynnville Friends Church, with the Rev. Marvin Miller officiating. Organist was Bernice Smith, and vocalists were Dave and Sue Vander Linden.

The son of Harry and Helen DeLancey Becker, he was born April 7, 1926, in Elgin. He was raised in Clermont and received his education in the Clermont School District, graduating from high school in 1943. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II and served in both the European and Pacific theaters.

He was married to Leta Lavon Gaynor May 17, 1947, in Clermont. They lived in several Iowa communities before moving to Lynnville in 1954.

Mr. Becker was a long-time biology teacher, football and track coach, and mentor in the Lynnville-Sully School District. His football accomplishments included nine Des Moines River Conference titles and three undefeated squads. He was inducted into the Iowa Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1983. He retired from education and coaching in 1986.

He was a former member of the Lynnville Lions Club.

Surviving are his wife; one son, Steve of Monona; one brother, Joe of Newton; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Peggy Fortch.
