Thos. Bates, Early Pioneer Died Satur’y
Funeral Services Were Held Monday At Cutter-Hartnett Funeral Home
Thomas Bates, an early pioneer of Jasper county, passed away Saturday afternoon at the James Hanna home in this city, following a short severe illness.
Mr. Bates was well known here in Colfax and by the early settlers in the Greencastle neighborhood, where he lived for many years. He was a man of quiet disposition, and while living most of his life alone, he thought much of his relatives and friends.
Thomas Bates, the son of Morgan and Rachel Bates was the first one which settled in the vicinity of Greencastle in the year 1862, where Tom grew to manhood and engaged in farming and teaming for a number of years, then moving to Mitchellville where the family resided until after the death of their father.
Tom came to Colfax to make his home over 30 years ago, being employed at railroad work much of that time.
He was a very steady and dependable nature and was always sure of employment whenever he was able to work. But for the past few years the condition of his health has prevented him from engaging in much strenuous labor.
Mr. Bates has been making his home with Mr. and Mrs. James Hanna, at whose home he passed to his final rest on Saturday afternoon, September 10th, 1932 at the age of 76 years.
He is survived by one sister-in-law, Mrs. Harry Bates of Des Moines, and daughters and a number of cousins and many old friends of Colfax and vicinity.
He was a good citizen and his passing away is regretted by all these relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Cutter-Hartnett Funeral Home with Rev. L. C. McDonald of the Methodist church officiating.
Music was furnished by Mrs. P. W. Farrelland and Mrs. B. F. Van dyke with Mrs. Cleo Wall at the piano.
Interment was made at the McKeever cemetery, north of Colfax.
Pall bearers were James Hanna, Clint Boyd, Oliver Pflaum, Emory Pflaum, S. C. Paschal and Henry Sharp.
