Bob was the son of Ralph C and Edythe (Bates) Bowman. He was born May 29, 1924 in Marshalltown and attended Marshalltown Schools graduating in 1942. He also attended Marshalltown Junior College for one year. He enlisted in the Navy in 1943, trained in Farragut, Idaho and shipped with the amphibian division to England as a Signalman 1st Class. During the D-Day invasion his Landing Craft Tank was assigned to carry tanks and troops onto Omaha Beach. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and received the World War II Victory Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and a service star.

On March 23, 1946 he was united in marriage to Shirley Schlicht in Marshalltown. They moved to California where he attended Loyola University of Los Angeles. He transferred to Creighton University in Omaha and graduated in 1949 with an accounting degree. He passed his CPA exam in 1954 and holds Iowa certificate #350. He worked in Marshalltown for Lennox, Fishers, the Iowa Employment Office, R. A. Wester Accounting Firm and Winters Dairy. He opened his own accounting practice in 1956 in the Tremont Building at 24 West Main Street, then moved his business in 1966 to 132 West Main where it was purchased in 1983 by his son, Jim. He served on the Marshalltown Park Board during the acquisition of the land for the Little League diamonds. He was a member of the Optimist Club, Chamber of Commerce, Marshalltown Community College Foundation, the Iowa Society of CPA's and American Institute of CPA's. He was past president of the Elmwood Country Club, a lifetime member of the American Legion, a 70 year member of the Elks Lodge and a trustee on the Phyllis Perry Hulton Educational Trust. Bob and Shirley spent many years traveling to Wyoming for antelope, elk and deer hunting, trout fishing and visits to their cabin near Douglas. Over the years Bob took pleasure in spending time with friends and family playing golf, tennis, billiards, cards and his dry sense of humor and musical accompaniment will be especially missed.
