Wife of Ex-Slave and Minister Died at Colfax Monday
Oldest Charter Member of Bethel Baptist (Colored) Church
Mrs. Susie Kinney Clark, 75, wife of an ex-slave and former minister of the local Bethel Baptist church, died at her home in Colfax Monday.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. this (Thursday) afternoon at the Bethel Baptist Church.
Mrs. Susie Kinney Clark was born in Albermarle county, Va., near Charlottesville, Va., December 25, 1863, and passed away January 16, 1939 at 12:35 a.m. at the home of Mrs. Anna Brown. She was 75 years and 22 days of age
In her early life she came with her husband and two children to Muchakinock, Iowa. They moved to Colfax in 1904 and lived here continuously until the death of her husband five years ago, when she went to Newton to make her home with her grandson and wife, Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Chaney. Last fall she came to Colfax and roomed with Mrs. Brown.
She was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church for 35 years, being the oldest charter member.
She leaves to mourn her loss, one sister, Mrs. Alice Saunder of Chicago, a grandson and wife, Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Chaney of Newton, nieces, nephews, a number of other relatives and a host of friends.
