Norma Jeanne Smith, 89, of Newton, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2014, at Newton Healthcare. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials in Jeanne’s name may be left at the funeral home.

Jeanne, the daughter of Frank and Sylvia Mae (McKim) Lockhart, was born on Oct. 21, 1925, in Albia. She attended school in Knoxville, and moved to Newton shortly after. Jeanne was united in marriage with Wayne Smith on Dec. 31, 1943, in Missouri. She worked at Stockton’s Super-Valu as a cashier and stocker and also sold Stanley Home Products.

Jeanne is survived by her husband, Wayne Smith of Newton; children, Carolyn (Chuck) Etter of Clarion, Gary (Toba) Smith of Fayetteville, N.C., and Doug (Beth) Smith of Newton; her son-in-law, Denny Purtilo of Newton; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter Barb Purtilo; grandson Kevin Purtilo; and her siblings. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa
