Dorothy went home to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on Feb. 7, 2014, at the age of 93. Dorothy was born in Prairie City, Sept. 20, 1920, the daughter of John William and Wilhelmina (Griffioen) Messmaker. It was there she spent her childhood and graduated from Prairie City High School in 1937. She married Kenneth Quentin Cline on Oct. 10, 1939, in Prairie City. After Kenny enlisted in the Army Air Corps they moved to Bakersfield, Calif., where Kenny served as a flight instructor at Minter Field during WW II. In 1944, their only son Kenneth Bryan Cline was born. On March 24, 1956, Kenny went home to be with the Lord. After Kenny’s death Dorothy worked for Bardsley Elementary School in Bakersfield from 1957-1959. On June 20, 1959, in Ventura, Calif., she married Dr. Howard B. Peto, founder of Peto Seed Company located in Saticoy, Calif. They were active in Ventura Assembly of God and People’s Church. They enjoyed many years of travel around the world with their association with Peto Seed Company, the Pacific Seed Association, Full Gospel Businessmen’s Association, Youth With A Mission and as Regents of Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla. (1968-1976). In 1969, Howard sold Peto Seed Company and they semi-retired and moved to Scottsdale, Ariz., in 1970.
They also enjoyed traveling across the U.S. and Canada in their trailer visiting family and friends. In 1976, Dorothy and Howard moved back to Bakersfield to be closer to family. They shared 26 years of marriage until Howard’s death on May 4, 1985.
Dorothy was a homemaker and active member of Full Gospel Tabernacle later First Assembly of God in Bakersfield and enjoyed involvement with the Women’s Missionary Circle. She loved to go to church, shop, play Yahtzee, do crossword puzzles, and go to lunch with her church birthday club girls. She especially enjoyed family gatherings and doting on her granddaughters. In 2006, she moved to Visalia to be closer to her son’s family. She transferred her church membership to Visalia First Assembly. In 2009, she moved to Quail Park where she met many new friends. After four years at QP she moved to TLC in March of 2013, in Visalia. Thank you Dr. Lerro and all the caregivers at all the facilities and KD Hospice.
