Stanley T. Ashby, 93, of Kellogg, died peacefully Sunday, Oct. 19, 2014, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 1 at the Kellogg Christian Church in Kellogg. The family will greet friends with a coffee hour at the church following the service. Private family inurnment will be held at Bethel Cemetery. Memorials to the Kellogg Historical Society or the Kellogg Christian Church may be left at the church on the day of the service or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton.

Stan, the son of Robert and Lucille (Stanley) Ashby, was born April 4, 1921, in rural Lynnville. He graduated from Grinnell High School in 1939, where he had placed second in the Iowa State Wrestling Tournament. He was united in marriage with Barbara Starrett on June 7, 1942, in Newton. Stan was a lifelong farmer, having lived on the same farm for 62 years up until his recent passing. He was a member of the Kellogg Christian Church, a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge, a 30-year member of the Jasper County Fair Board, and a member of the Farm Bureau. He was a charter member of the Richland Go-Getters 4-H Club and served as a 4-H leader for 25 years. His service was recognized when he was chosen as the Grand Marshal of the Jasper County Fair in 2008. He also enjoyed cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes, fishing at his cabin in Minnesota, and had pitched many winning softball games for Grinnell teams.

Those left to honor Stan’s memory include his wife, Barbara of Kellogg; his son, Larry (Roxie) Ashby of Newton; two grandchildren, Johnna (Mark) Donahue of Colfax and Casey Nelson (fiancé Sophia Snapp) of Des Moines; a great-granddaughter, Charlotte Donahue of Colfax; and his sister, Mabel Jackson of Gilman.

Stan was preceded in death by his parents; and two daughters, Connie Nelson in 2007, and Caroline Ashby, in infancy. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa 29 Oct 2014.
