G. Arlene Hicks, 90, of rural Newton, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014, at her home. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27 at Cornerstone Bible Fellowship in Newton. Memorials in Arlene’s name may be left at the church during the visitation or service, or may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton.
Arlene, the daughter of Charles and Alta (Baker) Simbro, was born Feb. 12, 1924, in Dunreath. She was united in marriage with Charles “Bill” Hicks on Feb. 14, 1970, at Wittemberg Church in rural Newton. She enjoyed her life as a wife, mother and grandmother, and welcomed everyone into her home. She was a lifetime member of the VFW Ladies’ Auxiliary. Arlene was also an avid bowler for more than 20 years. She also enjoyed tending to her flower gardens.
Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Harold Meyer, Sr.; four sons, Leroy, Harold Jr., Brian and Jeff; two daughters, Helen and Karen; one grandson; two brothers; one sister; and two half-sisters.
Those left to honor Arlene’s memory include her husband, Bill of Newton; children, Arden (Sandy) Meyer of Newton, Harriett (Gary) Allspach of Newton, Randy (Diane) Meyer of Newton, Melinda (Mark) Housley of Newton and Alta (Jim) Hendershott of Marshalltown; her step-son, Robby Hicks of Marshalltown; 19 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; her brother, Eugene (Gladys) Simbro; half brothers, Jim Simbro, Dennis Simbro and Ronnie Simbro; and half sister, Sharon Witterling. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa 27 Oct 2014.
