Captain Cozad Passes Away
Aged Resident, Jasper County Pioneer, Dies at Home in Newton After Week’s Illness with Pneumonia
Captain F. W. Kozad (sic), aged 93 years, pioneer resident of Jasper county, died at his home this morning at 5 o’clock after a week’s struggle with pneumonia. He was one of Jasper county’s early pioneers, having come to Newton in 1854, where he has resided continuously with the exception of three years serving in the Civil War. Captain Cozad was born in Lewis county, W. Va., Feb. 17, 1827 and from childhood, his life has been one of romantic adventure. When nine years old he and three younger brothers were captured by the Indians and held in captivity four years before their father affected a rescue. In 1849, attracted by love of adventure, he journeyed westward to Panama, a year later sailing northward to San Francisco, locating finally in Trinity county, where he spent three years prospecting for gold.
He returned in 1853 to Cincinnati when after a year given to the manufacture of carriages, he come to Newton, engaging in the mercantile business until 1862 when the call came for 300,000 volunteers. In four days time he raised a company of 100 men – the old Company D. Fortieth Iowa Volunteer Infantry, of which he was made captain. Capt. Cozad served three years and participated in many skirmishes and was in the siege of Vicksburg. After the war he returned to his business interest in Newton. He had married Sarah A. Scott in Richmond, Va., in 1856, who died Oct. 25, 1899. In 1907 he was married to Mrs. Celia Therese Wormley, whose death occurred in February 1917, in this city.
Captain Cozad was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and also of the Garrett Post No. 16, G.A.R. He has been a member of the Masonic order since 1862.
Captain Cozad leaves two children and two grandchildren – Mrs. Ida McCulley and her son and daughter, Don McCulley and Mrs. Bessie McCulley Osgood, all of Jefferson, Iowa.
The son, Mr. Charles B. Cozad, is engaged in the drug business in Adel. Mrs.Ida McCulley has been caring for her father during his illness and was with him at the time of his death. Relatives from Jefferson and Adel will arrive Tuesday.
Funeral services will be conducted by D. W. H. Hoppe at the Methodist church, Wednesday afternoon at 2:30.
