Emmetsburg, IowaThomas Vincent Hayden, the eleventh of twelve children, was born on July 11, 1925 in DeSmet, South Dakota to Rhoda (Archer) and James Hayden. Thomas graduated with the DeSmet High School Class of 1943 and then farmed for a time with his brothers near DeSmet. He earned a degree in Agriculture from South Dakota State University in Brookings.
On August 7, 1954, he married Beverly Ann Bergheim in Howard, South Dakota. After working awhile in the livestock feed industry he began a career of teaching vocational agriculture. He had many happy memories of fishing trips with his students to the Gooseberry Falls area of Canada.
In 1971 he moved his family to Emmetsburg and joined the Farm Management department of Iowa Lakes Community College. While there he taught swine production classes in both the classroom and college farm laboratory setting. During this time he also raised purebred Hampshire pigs with his sons on his farm west of town. He retired from the college in 1991 and later was honored with the title of “Professor Emeritus”.
Following retirement he was able to devote more time to pastimes such as fishing, golfing and playing cards. Every year he helped organize a family reunion for his large, extended family. He looked forward to spending time every winter in Arizona and made several good friends while there.
