Janet Elaine Sloan Mar 17, 1944 - Apr 28, 2014

Janet Elaine Sloan, age 70 of Prairie City, passed away on Monday, April 28, 2014 in her home. Private graveside services will be held at the Waveland Cemetery. There will be a celebration of her life at the Prairie City Church of the Brethren beginning at Noon on Saturday, May 24.

The daughter of Walter "Bert" and Lorene Van Haalen, Janet was born March 17, 1944 in Des Moines, Iowa. She graduated from Prairie City High School. She often spoke of her idyllic childhood spending time with good friends and her brother John, hanging out at her father's store and playing her favorite sport - basketball.

She married the late Charles Dean Sloan from Monroe, Iowa and they started their family in the Des Moines area. Soon they relocated to Fort Wayne, Indiana where she obtained her nursing degree and went on to be a nurse for over 35 years. After a relocation to Prescott, Arizona she moved back to Prairie City and worked at Skiff Hospital in Newton, until retiring in 2009.

She is survived by her children and their spouses Susan Cathleen Sloan of Prairie City, Charles Michael and Janel Sloan of Pleasanton, California, Kristen and Nick Dugan of Chanhassen, Minnesota, her grandchildren Megan and Evan Sloan of Pleasanton, California, her brother John Van Haalen of Prairie City and her Uncle Ralph and Val McAdoo of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Janet enjoyed following Nascar, had a great love for animals and especially enjoyed spending time with good friends and family. Our Mother was the most supportive, compassionate and kind hearted woman. We will miss her perseverance, her ability to make us laugh and her wit. Most of all, we will miss her presence and enduring blue eyes.

Memorials may be directed to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa in Des Moines. Condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com. ~ The Coburn Funeral Home, Colfax, Iowa.
