YOUNTVILLE, Calif. – Helen Elizabeth Drew, 86, of Yountville, Calif., formerly of Newton, died of an extended illness Sept. 29 at the Veterans Home of California in Yountville.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at the Veterans Home Chapel of California. The body was cremated.

Memorials will be accepted to the Jasper County Historical Museum Society.

The daughter of A. Ray and Florence Watt Drew, she was born Sept. 7, 1915, in San Jose, Calif. Her family lived in Newton for a time. She attended high school in Long beach, Calif., and earned a master’s degree from UCLA. She was an active local volunteer, as well as a world traveler, having visited in the Far East, South Pacific Islands, the former Soviet Union, Europe and Mexico. She retired from the J. C. Penney Company as a buyer, residing several years in London and Florence, Italy. She served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. Miss Drew taught English to Hispanics, managed a Red Cross Blood Bank and was employed at various secretarial jobs. She was a member of the Jasper County Historical Museum Society.
