Alvin V. Whitlatch, 86, of Newton died on Wednesday, February 12, 2014, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. A funeral service will be held at 11 A.M., Monday, February 17, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 10 A.M. until the time of service on Monday. Memorials in Alvin’s name to be used for various organizations he supported may be left at the funeral home. Alvin, the son of Ancil and Myrtle (Ewald) Whitlatch, was born on June 2, 1927 in Russell, Iowa. He grew up in Russell and Chariton and graduated from Chariton High School in 1946. He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1946-1948. Alvin was united in marriage with Colleen Drake on July 3, 1948 in Knoxville. They lived in Knoxville and Des Moines before making their home in Newton. Alvin worked at the Maytag Company in Newton for 32 years. He was an active member of the New Life Nazarene Church serving as the Sunday School Superintendent and teacher, a member of the church board, and as a lay pastor. Alvin is survived by his children, Cyndi Best of Rockford, IL, Alan (Wilma) Whitlatch of Simpsonville, SC, and David (Alice) Whitlatch of Newton; 8 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Anna Laura (Jack) Dinkel of Bentonville, AR and Nick (Terry) Whitlatch of Centerton, AR. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Colleen Whitlatch.
