Maurice D. Woods

Maurice D. Woods, 71, of Rt. 4, Newton, a self-employed auto mechanic who operated Woods Garage for the past 37 years, died Wednesday, June 5, at Skiff Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 8, at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. E. William Kaska, pastor of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Slagel Cemetery.

Military services will be conducted by the veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1655.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. today, June 6. Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 7, at the funeral home.

Memorials to the Lupus Foundation will be accepted.

Survivors are his wife, Mary; a son, Marvin Woods at home; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Mr. Woods was a member of the Sacred heart Catholic Church and the Newton VFW Post 1655.

Mr. Woods, a veteran of World War II, served in Australia in 1942 and later in the South Pacific Theater. He was wounded and received the Purple Heart.

The son of Wildman and Pearl Vanscoy woods, he was born Aug. 7, 1913 at the Woods home southeast of Newton.

He was married to Mary H. Hart June 1, 1946 in Sydney, Australia. ~ Newspaper unknown, possibly The Des Moines Register or The Newton (IA) Daily News.
