Services held Monday for Winnifred Bowen

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, October 22, at the United Methodist Church in Prairie city for Winnifred B. Bowen, 78. Mrs. Bowen died October 19 at Clearview Manor in Prairie City.

The Rev. James Seibert, pastor of the church, conducted services. Burial was in Waveland cemetery at Prairie city.

Organist was Mrs. W. R. Burns.

Casket bearers were Bill J. Burch, Joe Williams, Frank Clark, Dwight Kennedy, Jim Foreman, and Melvin McReynolds.

Honorary casket bearers were Gordon Enyart, Leonard Trunnel and Beryle Conley.

Walters Coburn funeral home handled arrangements.

Winnifred Martin, the daughter of Samuel and Rose Fouch Martin, was born September 9, 1906 at Fairmount, Iowa. A 1925 graduate of Monroe high school, she attended Monmouth Normal College and received her B.S. from Drake University in 1941. Mrs. Bowen also participated in the Fred wearing and Paul Christiansen workshops.

On August 4, 1945 she was united in marriage to Vernon C. Bowen in Des Moines.

She directed the music and recreation for the 1942 National Farm Bureau meeting in Chicago.

Bowen taught school in Eaton, Castle Rock and Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Anchorage Alaska; in highway she taught at Hedrick, Monroe, Highview Consolidated, Dallas, Prairie City, Colfax, and retired from teaching at the Newton schools in 1967. She had also worked for the Iowa State Extension Service that Iowa State University from 1941 to 1945.

Mrs. Bowen was a member of the United Methodist Church, Daughters of the Nile, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, O.D.O. Club, Highland Park Coffee Club, and was a charter member of the T.T.T. Chapter AJ.

Surviving are a sister-in-law, Mrs. Travis (Kathryn) Walters of Prairie City, two brothers-in-law, Robert Bowen, Prairie City and Merrill Bowen of Colfax; several nieces and nephews and cousins.

Preceding her in death were her husband, parents, and a sister, Florence. ~ Newspaper unnamed, possibly The Des Moines Register or the Newton (IA) Daily News.
