William Merle Benson, 91, of 500 1st St. N., died of heart failure Monday, October 2.
Funeral services will be held at 11:38 a.m. Monday at Pence Funeral Home (formally Wallace-Pence). The Rev. David Raymond, retired pastor of Congregational United Church of Christ in Newton, will officiate. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at Pence Funeral Home. Memorials to Moose Lodge of Newton will be accepted.
The son of Edwin Melton and Daisy Ann Benson, he was born July 11, 1909 in Washington. He graduated from Washington High School and also was a graduate from Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant. Mr. Benson married Elizabeth R. "Betty" Ross May 10, 1938 in Washington.
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II and received a Bronze Star. Benson owned and operated Farmer Super Market, retiring in 1965. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Newton; Newton Masonic Lodge #59 A.F. &A. M.; And the bowling league for 18 years.
He is Survived by by one son, Robert Milton "Bobby" Benson of Newton; and one daughter and son-in-law Patsy and Carol Bissell of Hollister California; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a brother; and six sisters. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News Fri 6 Oct 2008.

Mr. Benson was born in Washington and had lived in Newton most of his life. He had owned and operated Farmer Super Food Market and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his service. He was a member of Moose Lodge and Masonic Lodge and was a league bowler.
Surviving are a son, Robert of Newton; a daughter, Patsy Bissell of Hollister, California; a brother George of Florida; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth.
