Sandra K. (Willemsen) Van Weelden, 69, of Otley died Sunday morning, Jan. 12, 2014, at her residence near Monroe.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, at the Faith Christian Reformed Church in Pella. Interment will be made at the Silent City Cemetery in Monroe.

Visitation will begin Wednesday afternoon at the Faith Christian Reformed Church, where the family will be present from 4 to 7 p.m. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News.

Pella — Sandra Kay was born February 19, 1944, in Des Moines, Iowa. Her parents, Joe (Johannes) and Martha (Brouwer) Willemsen, lived northwest of Otley, Iowa.

Sandra attended grade school in Otley and graduated from high school in Monroe, Iowa with the Class of 1962. During grade school, she learned to play the piano and organ.

Following high school she attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, Iowa which later equipped her for employment.

On September 18, 1962, she and Ronald Bryce Van Weelden were united in marriage at the Otley Reformed Church in Otley and to this union three children were born: Bryce Eugene, Brent Duane, and Myla Jo. Sandra and Ron moved to her parents’ farm in 1966 where they began farming together. Sandra then began working at the Rolscreen Company in Pella, Iowa as a key punch operator.

She later found employment at the Vernon Company in Newton, Iowa, worked at the Otley Locker and then for Steenhoek Appraisal in Pella. Sandra retired from there in May of 2013, however, through all these remained a very loyal help mate on the farm. She and Ron were privileged to enjoy 51 years of married life together and enjoyed traveling and spending time with their family and friends.

She loved her grandchildren, playing cards and reading. Her pride and joy was also evident in the yard on their farm where she found pleasure in arranging planters in both the spring and summer.

On Sunday morning, January 12, 2014, Sandra passed away at her home near Monroe at the age of 69 years following a short month diagnosis with cancer.

She will be greatly missed by her husband, Ron; their three children and their spouses: Bryce and Susan Van Weelden of Peoria, Iowa and their three children: Chris and Barbi Fagg, Jeff and Amy Fagg, Nicole and Service Member Charles Pierson; Brent and Amanda Van Weelden of Washington, Iowa and their two sons: Trey and Tyler; Myla and Jeff Case of Waukee, Iowa and their two sons: Aaron and Conner; along with 8 great-grandchildren. Sandra leaves the following brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Harley and Norma Van Weelden of Pella, Verna (Van Weelden) and Arthur Zylstra of Pella, Dwight and Jerilyn Van Weelden of Lynnville, Iowa, Marsha (Van Weelden) Steenhoek of Ames, Iowa, Curtis and Amy Van Weelden of Waukesha, Wisconsin. Sandra was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Martha Willemsen, a brother, Henry William Willemsen, and an infant sister, Alice Jean Willemsen; and her parents-in-law, Dick and Anna (Van Wyk) Van Weelden. Sandra was a member of the Red Hat Society, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Faith Christian Reformed Church in Pella, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at the Faith Christian Reformed Church in Pella on Thursday, January 16, 2014. Van Dyk – Duven Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. ~ The Pella Chronicle, Pella, Iowa.
