July 11, 1935 - October 10, 2013Lester H. Evans, age 78 of Prairie City, died Thursday, October 10, 2013, at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines. Graveside services will be held on Monday, October 14, 2013, at 9:30 a.m. at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel. A memorial gathering will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday at the Prairie City Community Room. The public is welcome to stop by and share stories about Les. The family will also greet friends on Sunday from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Coburn Funeral Home in Prairie City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Semper Max Support Fund, P.O. The son of Grant and Alma (Parker) Evans, Les was born on July 11, 1935, in Omaha, Nebraska. Les proudly served in the United States Marines, retiring in 1973 after serving two tours in Vietnam. On September 28, 1956, he was united in marriage to Beverly Joan Queen in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
Following his retirement from the military, Les was involved in law enforcement, serving as an officer in Guthrie Center, a deputy also in Guthrie County, as chief of police in Adair and as chief of police in Prairie City. Les also served as the Mayor in Prairie City. He was also a member of the American Legion in Guthrie Center and Monroe and the VFW in Adair.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Beverly; children, Lester Henry Evans Jr. of Stafford, Virginia, Deborah Ann Leeper of Rockwell, Texas, Sherry Janine Evans of Altoona, and Renee Francine Keutzer of Guthrie Center, Iowa; 10 grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Preceding Les in death were his parents, sisters, Illamaye Madren and Lucille Heath; brothers, Walt, Grant and David and his step mother, Mae Evans. ~ The Coburn Funeral Home, Colfax, Iowa.
