Maxine Burk, 88, of Oskaloosa died peacefully Sunday afternoon, October 13, 2013, surrounded by her family at her home in Oskaloosa.

Maxine Louise Burk, daughter of Malcolm Collins and Sarah Dew, was born August 24, 1925, in Newton, Iowa. Maxine met the love-of-her-life, Harold “Doc” Burk at age 15, and they were married, April 14, 1941, in Unionville, MO. They made their first home in Marysville, IA and over the years also resided in Lovilia and Newton.

Maxine began working as a nursing assistant in 1969 and worked in nursing homes in the communities where she lived; she retired from the Albia Manor in 1990. Maxine enjoyed cooking, baking and crocheting afghans for her large family.

Maxine’s family included six daughters and seven sons of which the following survive her: Mary Ann (Bob) Bridgeman of Mapleton, IA; Betty (Bill) Woollums of Albia, IA; Marjorie Bakalar of Panama City Beach, FL, and Marilyn (John) Isley of Oskaloosa, IA; six sons: Walter (Cheryl) Burk of Savahana, Il, George (Rachael) Burk of Oskaloosa, IA, Jack (Claudia) Burk of Council Bluffs, IA, Larry (Vickie) Burk of Oskaloosa, IA, James (Sue) Burk of Troy, MO, and Mark (Amy) Burk of Council Bluffs, IA. Maxine was blessed with more than 250 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She is survived by two brothers: Don and Albert Collins; and two sisters: Marjorie Ives and Betty Parker.

In addition to her parents, Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Harold on April 26, 1989; a son, Harold Alvin Burk in 2004; two daughters: Alberta McVay and Patricia Ford; five brothers: Dale, Jimmy, Paul, Robert and John Collins; a sister, Dorothy Van Ruth; and five grandchildren: Joseph Eddy, Gale Woollums, Colter Ford, Sierra Burk and Cecila Johannsen.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 16, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Pastor Rick Smith of Iowa Hospice officiating. Burial of her ashes will be in Marysville Cemetery in Marion County. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m., Tuesday; the family will be present from 5-7 p.m. to greet visitors. Memorials may be made to her family.
