Carl H. Cox, Jr.

SPRINGFIELD - Carl H. Cox, Jr., 82, of Springfield, Ill., died at 4:43 p.m. on Sunday, June 30, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center with his children by his side.

Carl was born August 5, 1930, in St. Joseph, Mo., the son of Carl and Anna Shea Cox, Sr. He went to school in St. Joseph and graduated High School at Christian Brothers in 1948.

Carl was a 1952 graduate of Alexian Brothers Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago, then enlisted in the U.S. Army and served our country during the Korean War conflict. Upon his return, he enrolled in St. Johns Hospital School of Anesthesiology in Springfield and graduated as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist in 1957. He was employed and practiced Anesthesia with hospitals in Illinois, Missouri and Iowa, then retired after a fulfilling 25 year career.

Carl was nicknamed "Sunny" at an early age because he was a bright student with a positive outlook on life and was always focused on helping others.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Robert Cox; nephew, Robert Cox, Jr.; and the mother of his children, Dorothy J. Cox.

He is survived by two sons, Steven (wife, Cindy) Cox of Alpharetta, Ga., and Paul (wife, Dixie) Cox of Newton, Iowa; three daughters, Karen (husband, Jim) Hermes of Franklin, Barbara (husband, David) Prose of Ottumwa, Iowa, and Mary Jane Burns of Springfield; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one niece, Teri Cox.

Carl was cremated by Lincoln Land Cremation Society and will be buried at 2 p.m. on Friday, August 2, 2013, at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield. He will receive full military honors and a Christian Rite of Committal Service.
