Ruth was born November 9, 1928 in Grinnell, the daughter of Jerome Brown and Minnie Caroline Jantzen Parmley. She received her education in the rural school system of Jasper County at Rock Creek School #8.

On February 22, 1947, she was united in marriage to Harold Lloyd Fleener, in Grinnell. They established a livestock and grain operation at her parents' farm where she grew up.

The couple raised cattle but Ruth's specialty was sheep with at least 100 ewes in her flock plus all the lambs. Ruth loved all animals and cared for them better than she did for herself. For over 20 years she maintained the Rock Creek Cemetery, mowing and trimming.

Ruth played several musical instruments and was a bowler. She was an excellent cook who never used a "box" to prepare anything. She was a member of the Victor Grange for 60 years, a member of the First Friends Church, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and the Jasper County Sheep Producers Association.

She is survived by her sister, Marlene Parmley of Grinnell. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1998, her mother in 1986 and her father in 2000. ~ The Smith Funeral Home Website, Grinnell, Iowa.
