Arlene Johnston, 76, of Fremont, Neb., formerly of Newton, passed away April 4, 2013.
She graduated from the Newton Senior High School Class of 1954. Arlene married Max Johnston in 1959. Preceding her in death were her parents, eight siblings and her husband in 1981.
Those surviving are her children, Scott Johnston and Sheryl (Scott) Brown; her grandchildren, Andrew Brown and Sarrianna Johnston; her brother, James (Marilyn) Humke of Newton; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News Website.

Arlene A. Johnston, 76, passed away Thursday, April 4, 2013, at Saunders Care Center in Wahoo.Arlene was born Sept. 4, 1936, to Arvin and Myrtle Humke in Dubuque, Iowa. She attended high school in Newton, Iowa, where she also worked at the family bakery. She married Max Johnston on Jan. 23, 1959, in Grinnell, Iowa. After Max graduated from college, they lived in Des Moines, Iowa, until he was relocated to Fremont for work in the mid 1960s. Arlene then worked for the City of Fremont for more than 20 years until her retirement.
Arlene was an extremely avid bridge player and was a member of many bridge groups. She held fundraisers for the Nebraska Children’s Home Society. She was also a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include: a son, Scott Johnston of Fremont; a daughter, Sheryl (and husband, Scott) Brown of Fremont; a grandson, Andrew Brown of Fort Collins, Colo.; a granddaughter, Sarrianna Johnston; a brother, Jim (and wife, Marilyn) Humke of Newton, Iowa; special friend and niece, Rhonda Prine of Saylorville, Iowa; and many other friends, family, nieces and nephews
She was preceded in death by her husband, Max; parents, Arvin and Myrtle; and four brothers.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Greg Hall officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday at Dugan Funeral Chapel with the family present 5-6 p.m.
