Wilbur Weeks

Friday last, W. C. Weeks received a telegram from Clark, S. D., saying that his son Wilbur was dead. Mr. Weeks wired to send his remains to Baxter. Accordingly, they arrived Tuesday morning, accompanied by Mrs. Weeks and their child. Upon their arrival here it was learned for the first time that his death was caused by a premature discharge of a shotgun. Wilbur had just passed through a siege of sickness, but had almost entirely recovered and was quite cheerful the evening of the fatal accident. About the house was an old sawed-off shotgun, and Wilbur retired with it to the kitchen for the purpose of cleaning and fitting it for service. His wife retired a little after nine o’clock, but Wilbur kept on with his working, singing as he proceeded with his work. Mrs. Weeks called and asked him if he was going to sing all night? He said he would retire pretty soon, but the words hardly left him when the gun discharged and Weeks was dead to this world forever. ~ The Newton News, Saturday, September 26, 1903, Page 4, Column 2 - Baxter
