DELBERT AUGUST NICKLAUS, 78 IOWA CITY, IA. - Delbert August Nicklaus, 78, of Iowa City, died Sunday, March 17, at his home surrounded by his family.

Del was born on January 4, 1935, in Parkersburg, IA, to August and Tillie Nicklaus. He attended UNI on a basketball scholarship, graduating in 1957. From 1957-1959, Del served his country in the White House under Eisenhower. He married Karen Troen in Newton, IA, on July 2, 1961. Del spent his entire career in teaching, coaching and athletic administration, including 26 years at Geneseo (Ill.) High School. He retired in 1995. Del is survived by his wife of 52 years, Karen; children, Kristi (Ken) Markuson of Libertyville, Ill. and Tor (Laura) Nicklaus of North Liberty, IA; grandchildren, Claire & Luke Markuson and August & Samuel Nicklaus.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 23, at the First Presbyterian Church, 2701 Rochester Avenue, Iowa City. A luncheon will immediately follow the service. Memorials may be made to the University of Northern Iowa Foundation designated for the men's basketball program. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.lensingfuneral.com.
